Lighthouses of North Carolina

Seven Historic North Carolina Lighthouses

There are seven major lighthouses that were built to warn mariners of the treacherous shifting shoals along the  North Carolina coast known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic".

  • Currituck Beach Lighthouse is 162-foot tall and was left as unpainted red brick to distinguish it from its neighbors.
  • Bodie Island Lighthouse has horizontal black-and-white bands, and is 156-foot tall.
  • Cape Hatteras Lighthouse with its black-and-white spiral pattern is 208 feet making it the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.
  • Ocracoke Lighthouse built in 1823 is the oldest lighthouse in continuous service in the state and the second oldest in the country. This whitewashed conical tower is only 75 feet tall.
  • Cape Lookout Lighthouse has a  black-and-white diamond pattern and is 156 feet high.
  • Old Baldy Lighthouse constructed in 1817 is 110 feet tall and is the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina.
  • Oak Island Lighthouse is 153 feet tall and was completed in 1958 making it the state's newest coastal lighthouse.
